amazon-diana.livejournal.comMost days the women of Themyscira wear chitons or long tunics with leather sandals, some days they wear even less as they go about their business on the island that has been their home for thousands of years.
But not today.
Today they wear steel and leather, armor that is both new and older than most civilizations where straps have lovingly been replaced over the years to keep the piece functional without having to give up something that fits them like a second skin.
Weapons made by Io the blacksmith are oiled and sheathed and ready to be used. There are horses stamping and shaking their heads nearby, pawing the ground they look ready for their riders to join them.
The Amazons are a fighting force to be wary of, but they are limited in number and even though they are immortal they can die.
Diana and Artemis are listening to Phillipus outline the defense strategy, even though the United States has started the war they will try to keep to only defending their island and not bringing the attack to the outsiders. It's not that Artemis cares if they kill the soldiers but they aren't strong enough in numbers to play an offensive strategy.
Diana is angry. They are forcing her to fight, her sisters, Luthor, Circe and she is sure Ares is involved somewhere as well. She understands far better than anyone, except perhaps Artemis who spent time as Wonder Woman herself, that they are facing extinction unless evidence can be found to leverage their way to stopping the war.
Diana is to make sure that bombs do not make it to the island. They will use jets and laser guided weaponry in their attack. She doubts she will be able to stop them all.
Talking to John earlier made her wish he was here beside her, to fight with her, but she couldn't ask that. He is a Green Lantern, she won't ask him to do what he cannot do, she won't ask that of any of her friends in the League. Someone must be left to watch over those in the world if she is gone.
"Are you ready Diana?"
She turns to face Artemis. "I am. I will not speak of this again, but damn you for making me bring us to war Artemis. Hopefully some of Themyscira will survive the cost of your pride." With that she turns and makes her way out to the beach where she can wait for the first assault to come.
"Athena, you have not spoken to me for weeks now. I wish that I could hear your guidance, but I must make decisions on my own at times or I would not be worthy of being your champion. I am scared my Lady, but I still try to do what is right and defend my sisters without causing more harm."
She thinks of the two calls she had today, one from John and one from Bruce. They are right to be worried.
On the sand watching the skies she waits.
