Take Varicella zoster, otherwise known as chicken pox. You get it as a kid, and the virus remains dormant in your nervous system. During periods of stress or immunocompromise, the virus can be reactivated and you get shingles.

We think you're experiencing something similar. Either the sakutia virus, or the viral carrier with your father's experimental cure, allows you to rewrite your DNA and shift into different animal forms.
