Geri Halliwell.
Geri Halliwell blasting from Damon’s pc right into Kate’s office.
Geri Halliwell singing “It’s Raining Men” from Damon’s pc right into Kate’s office.
Remind her why she keeps him around again?
Kate Spencer rubs her eyes and stares at her door for a moment, briefly wishing that she was telekinetic so she could close her door without getting up. But she isn’t and she doesn’t want to get up to close the door either. The case she’s working on right now demands her full attention, attention she can’t afford to lose anywhere else.
Right. So buy ear plugs next time she goes to Target. Check.
She takes a sip from a frightfully cold cup of coffee and gags, setting it back down on its coaster. She could ask Damon for a fresh cup of coffee, but knowing him, he’s probably out there grooving to the former Ginger Spice.
Kate stares at the screen, looking over the particulars of her case. A new villain had popped up on the West Coast a few months ago, calling herself Lady Malady, of all things. It was an eye-roll inducing name to be certain, but at the same time it was one that Kate supposed made sense. From the files and police reports she’d read, it seemed that this Lady Malady – whose real name was Lauren Gytis – had the natural born ability to induce various diseases within people. Purportedly, she could also create cures for these people, but she hadn’t yet. Her master plan had been to get all of Southern California ill and then take over in exchange for creating cures for a very specific disease that she had created herself. Her plans had been foiled by two former members of the Power Company – two magic users codenamed Sapphire and Witchfire. Lauren Gytis had been brought in to custody – her powers dampened by Witchfire and the power of Sapphire’s gem – but not before she had gone hog wild and started infecting those around her – including one man named Clayton Kress, who had been one of Gytis’ henchmen. Clayton, who like an acquaintance of Kate’s named Dylan Battles, had worked for a good many other villains, had agreed to testify against Lady Malady in exchange for being set up with a new identity and being placed in the Witness Protection Program.
Problem is, Clayton hadn’t been protected soon enough. It had been discovered that Clayton had been infected with the HIV virus by way of Lauren Gytis during her rampage, and soon after this information had come out, he had disappeared. Kate, utilizing her second identity as the Manhunter, had done some research into the matter, but she still hadn’t discovered whether or not Clayton Kress had disappeared of his own accord for having full-blown AIDS or if he had been kidnapped by someone connected to Lady Malady, such as the Crime Doctor or someone else, just to keep him from spilling any more secrets. Kate had compiled a list of people who might have kidnapped Kress, but so far, her leads turned up nothing. The same was the case with Dylan, who it turned out had known Kress back in his own day as a professional henchman.
Couldn’t she get an easy case, just once? Something that didn’t have to do with mafia bosses or lunatics in spandex? Once, just once, couldn’t she just prosecute a dirty, cheating celebrity husband or something?
Probably not.
Kate had covered her other bases as well. She had contacted an old friend named Cameron Chase, who worked for the Department of Extranormal Operations to fill her in on the goings on of the case. It probably wasn’t the smartest move to make, since Kate knew that this would mean that this information would reach, oh, everyone from the FBI on up, but Kate didn’t have much of a choice. She needed to find her witness, and the DEO was the one group that she knew could help her.
She needed to bring Lady Malady down the legal way. Or at least she had to try.

Date: 2007-02-23 12:43 am (UTC)For all she knows it's a virus of some sort.
But Kate's a lawyer. She's a cape.
Curiosity's always going to get the better of her.
She clicks on the weird little icon.

Kate starts keying in the required information, putting in everything she knows about Clayton Kress.

Date: 2007-02-23 01:02 am (UTC)Useful as hell.
But scary.
Interesting information about Kress, though. Lots of things she could use if she needed to.
Which she did.
She clicks on the blinking TRAVEL, though. Clearly, the program has something in mind.

What would Kress be doing in Portsmouth? The place was so very un-henchman. And small, too, compared to Metropolis and Los Angeles.
But then again, this program looks like it knows what it's doing. So she checks out the Portsmouth links, seeing if maybe he went anywhere by plane earlier.
But...why Portsmouth?
That would need investigating if that is where he went.

Date: 2007-02-23 01:37 am (UTC)She could make millions off of this program if she could ever market it.
Or not.
That was how Dylan would think, not Kate.
Right. Best not tell Dylan about this nifty little program.
Someone who was recently infected with the HIV virus - or even someone who had full blown AIDS - would definitely be attracted by the healthcare facilities and heir credentials. If he did go there, that means he wasn't kidnapped.
Which means that she can still bring him in.
"Alright, TinkerDell. Think you can tell me if Clayton Kress is admitted in any hospitals in Portland?"

Date: 2007-02-23 01:55 am (UTC)And Geri Halliwell asking people to look at her in the background?
Not helping.
But still. No electronic records.
That's not good. That doesn't give her anything.
Which means that she needs to go to Portland in person to find what she needs.
Which means no weekend with her son Ramsey.
But that's okay. She'll make it up to him. Even if she does owe him horribly for all the times she's skipped on the poor boy so far.
