Open Message to the Justice League

Ted speaks into his Justice League communicator, on a non-emergency channel, knowing the Watchtower's systems will record the message for the membership to listen to at their convenience.

"Blue Beetle, here. As you are all aware, I have been largely inactive in the League recently, due to an unfortunate physical condition that limited my ability to contribute - and as helpful as monitor duty is, I think I can do more."

Ted pauses as he thinks of how best to phrase what comes next.

"I've developed a .. tool that will allow me to ignore the physical condition. I feel I'm once again fit for more active duty in the League. I'm sure some of you will have questions about my solution.." Bruce. "..and I'm more than happy to answer those questions."

His tone lightens as the nervousness passes. "So give me a call here in the studio, we're taking requests on our All-Rock weekend here at WBTL. Beetle out."

"My dear, paranoid little birdie." He's having fun with this. "Technology is neither good nor evil, but may be used for either. I assure you I properly exorcised the circuit diagrams that originated from analysis of work by Gorilla Grodd, T.O. Morrow, Professor Ivo, Prometheus, and the Thinker."

"The robot cannot think for itself - without my direct influence, it reverts to a few simple behaviors like 'hide' and 'return home'. And it's keyed to my brain patterns, so no one else will have an easy time using it, even if they did find the super-secret control chamber."

"Okay, so what happens if ... like ... I dunno ... its internal clock-radio starts blinking 12?"

"It's built to withstand an indefinite number of moderate-intensity EMPs, and to successfully recover from one high-intensity EMP, but if something should happen to cause a fault in the robot's operation, it will do its best to revert to the 'retreat' program provided in its firmware - and failing that, it will simply shut down."

"It simply can't run amok."

"How about skipping amuck? Can it do that? Hang on--" Her voice cuts out for a few minutes, then returns. "Hi. Oracle says I'm being a technophobe again. I prefer 'cautious,' but she says if I keep debating semantics, she's going to play the badger song at me."

He chuckles.

"Trust me, Dinah, it has every safeguard I can think of. There's more danger of someone telepathically seizing control of one of the rest of you and using you to attack the League than there is a danger of the robot going out of control."

"Every safeguard you can think of sounds spiffy, but when Tall, Dark, and Scowly thinks of a few more, I hope you're going to put 'em in. Canary out."
