Lioness looks at the monitor board, irritated that she doesn't get to go on the raid -

- and before she can internally complain again suddenly her eyes are drawn to some energy notation on one of the dials. She fires up a couple of the monitors for a visual, then jumps to her feet.

We've got multiple matter-portal openings across the Amerikan continent! Seven - no, nine - make that fourteen - heaps of 'em! All opening up, large enough for tanks!

Luthor reenters the main chamber of the Safe House in his newly upgraded armor, which now looks even tougher and stronger than ever before.

It shall have to suffice. I'm going to set up our teleport matrices - it should take maybe fifteen minutes. Lioness, you drew short straw, you're staying behind.

Everybody, take the time to get yourself ready. We're leaving as soon as possible.

"Next mission off world," thinks Ray Palmer, "I'm bringing my iPod."

He sighs, and continues going over The Justice Underground's files. The eerie parallels and differences between these worlds fascinate him, as does the implications of it.

"A world where good is evil and vice versa," he mutters. "Unbelievable." Really, it's as much a question for Zauriel as it is for a scientist, how something like this could come to be. He couldn't pretend to understand it at all.

But here he is, lost in his studies while they wait for their moment. Oddly, it occurrs to him that he may well be the only optimist on this entire planet. Surely, his colleagues were on the cynical side. Dependable, sure, but cynical.

Ray's not. Even with all that's happened to him. He's not stupid, but he knows they're going to find a way through this. They always do. It's what the League does. Even Huntress and Hawkgirl know that. It wasn't that long ago since Huntress, during her short time in the League, figured out how to beat Vandal Savage and the living sun Solaris one million months into the future. And Hawkgirl was on the JLA team with him that helped bring Arthur and Atlantis back from being trapped in the past.

They know the score. And Ray knows the JLA. Forecasting how the clockwork falls is just like unravelling physics. By now, either Clark or Wally have gotten impatient. Probably Wally. They're figuring out how to get here. If they're smart, it'll be some sort of diversion. That'll be the moment to hit. Hopefully, they're too smart to try a full-scale invasion. No. Someone'll put that idea down.

And by now, Batman's made some small progress, won some small victory. Ray recalls the alternate future Wally and Kyle viisted, where Desaad of Apokolips tortured Batman for months, and as bad as these Crime Syndicate guys are, they're not Darkseid.

This is how we do it. Across time, across dimensions -- it doesn't matter. Trust each other. Know each other's capabilities. Work as a team.

That's the bit the Syndicate doesn't get.

Steel, Terrific and Brainiac 5 have done most of the work, and they are just about ready with the electron batteries and the generators. The Ray's standing by, ready to pump his energy into creating these portals.

The rest of the League that's been able to stay is here just in case things get really ugly, really fast. Flash, Jesse Quick, Hawkman, Hawkwoman, Red Tornado, Plastic Man and Firestorm. Not the best odds against the Crime Syndicate, if they find a way to come through, but the reservists are on standby.

Flash wishes he could contact Ray to coordinate this better. He wishes he was sure that this was a good idea.

He wishes he could punch all those guys. He wishes someone smarter than him was running this show.

Could'ves and buts aren't beer and nuts, so this ain't a corker of a party.

"Anyone have a watch? How long have they been gone?"

Power Ring sits, staring at their prisoner. Ultraman's flown down planetside to escort that telepath back up here, Quick is off shooting up speed juice and Owlman and Superwoman are taking some "private time", like they think he's an idiot or something.

A solid green flyswatter emerges from his ring and slaps Batman lightly across the cheek.

Wake up, fish.

The brain spores STILL bite him in the butt from time to time.

Looking over the information from Oracle, the dim flashes of memory are coming back from the last time the League messed with the Antimatter Universe. The three-day limit isn't arbitrary - it's how long they can keep someone in their universe without his counterpart shifting over here... although Luthor said the dynamics had changed, but that's not what they need to concentrate on now.

Gathering the parts for the electron batteries they had to use for the portal last time - Flash had to recharge them by running insanely fast through the track they constructed. With Jesse here, perhaps they can charge the batteries in a fraction of the time it took. If they can get it all to work. The schematics are all here, it's just a matter of building it - hopefully Steel is up to the job.

Which leaves the tactical planning - and that's where you bring in Hawks. They fight good... and maybe it'll chill the dead... undead... guy out a bit if he gets to hit bad guys with his club.

"All right. We need to be loud, we need to be strong, and we need to be FAST, and we need to disorient them. Luthor said we shouldn't try to use their bargaining postures with each other against them, and I'd hate to second guess the guy on his own universe, but he did have some serious miscalculations last time around, so MAYBE he's doing it again. We saw a heck of a lot of ugly counterparts here, so it stands to reason that they have evil Titans Tower and an evil JSA Brownstone as well as the Panopticron on the moon. All potential targets we could hit."

Owlman is swearing at the monitor.

You're lucky I'm not calling in from the bank you owe us, you little turd -

Morning at Wayne Manor. The place is filled with sunlight, the outside - visible thanks to the drapes pulled open - a pristine white thanks to a fresh-fallen foot of snow. From the kitchen, where Bruce is heading, the smells of breakfast come: toast, bacon, eggs, and coffee, his favored nectar. The hallmarks of a fine family feast, English breakfast-style, are everywhere. Barbara and Dick are sitting with Mary in her highchair, and Selina, still tousled from sleep, is drinking coffee. Tim, Jason, Mar'i and Ibn are even there, fighting over the latest stack of pancakes. His family, his loved ones.

Feeling cheerful about life (especially for him), Bruce puts a hand on Alfred's shoulder and says, "How about making some French toast too, old man?"

So this Justice Underground with the good-guy Lex Luthor just absconded with Hawkgirl, Huntress and Atom.

Which leaves a large contingent of Leaguers and Reservists with time on their hands in Nebraska, waiting for news on their mission to rescue Batman.

The Flash doesn't wait well.

"Okay, okay. We can't just sit here on our hands waiting for AlternaLex to give our team back to us. What can we do? Do we just go back to our jobs and cross our fingers and hope? Shouldn't we set up our own portal, in case they need backup, or see if we can't have J'onn link up with them THROUGH it so we can help them find Bats? Or should we start planning our defenses for when those jerks DO get their crap together and decide on a full-fledged invasion? I mean, if they bring all their jerks here, that might definitely free up THEIR world for AlternaLex and his gang to do some real damage, and you know, we could probably convince some of the bad guys here to help fight off these jerks, it's their world too and all, but you'll probably have your standard uncooperative guys who can't look past a grudge to spite their face or however that saying goes, but if I smack Captain Cold hard enough he might get the point..."

He'll keep going like this if nobody stops him.

In Limbo, floating in a sea of white nothingness, the Justice Underground has their last bastion of safety - the only place where they can retreat from the grasping hands of the Syndicate, the Lodge, and all the other organizations that would cheerfully see them annihilated.

Man O' War sits at the monitors, fingers twitching, desperate for action. He drew the short straw and had to stay behind - somebody always does - but Luthor's plan was dangerous in the extreme. He does not like sitting idly.

And then the air rips apart for a split second, and strangers emerge. His face hardens as he hefts his trident - three invaders, two women and a man - who could have sent them?

The void of unconsciousness fades, black becoming gray, and sensation returns.

At that point, matters become entirely less pleasant.

His face aches from more than the beating that he took from - and returned to - Owlman. At the edge of his thoughts, as he tries to recall the last thing that happened before he lost consciousness, he remembers Superwoman flying over and backhanding him. Must be why his face and head hurt. Definitely the worst of the damage. An ache exists in his arms which he realizes, belatedly, comes from the fact he is suspended by his hands. Somehow.

More sitrep. His chest is bare because the armor is gone, along with the utility belt. Naturally. Tights and boots remain, as does his cowl, but the cape and gloves are off too. He can see little thanks to the extremely low lighting, but from the gravity - not normal levels at all - he senses he's in space.

The Panopticon.

His eyes close as he starts to muster his strength.

The debate as to who can risk going to the Antimatter Universe to rescue Batman goes on.

Then, descending from the ceiling, comes Hawkman and Hawkwoman.

This Hawkman is bearing wings that spring directly from his back - natural wings, not the flight rigs the rest of the Hawks wear.

"Let US go."

It's not Carter Hall.

Alexander Luthor sits a ways away from the others, cradling the body of his friend in his arms.

Kalipso dead, Batman captured - they got the equipment, of course, but Owlman found a way to profit from what should have been a total loss.

It cannot be allowed to stand.

I'm so sorry, Kalipso. Byomeh. I'm so sorry.

The flickering pinprick of light starts oscillating furiously, then pulsing, and finally it rips open, revealing - well, a warehouse that looks exactly the same as this one.

But nobody's looking at the warehouse on Earth-2 (or Earth-1, depending on which world you happen to come from). That's because the first thing anybody sees or hears is the scream of fury from a man with the power of a god, hurtling towards the one man he hates more than any other.

LUTHOR! YOU MONGREL AFTERBIRTH!
[identity profile] lexcorp-media.livejournal.com
NEW YORK CITY- In a speech today at Columbia University, President Lex Luthor announced a new initiative that would guarantee tax deductions for all college-bound students.

"America's strength is preserved only through knowledge, and we increase our knowledge only through the intelligence and experience of our people. To this end, I have drafted new legislation that will offer a tax deduction to all American families earning less than one hundred thousand dollars per year, that will refund fully one-half of all university or college tuition paid out in the form of a tax credit. This tax credit will even be applicable to students attending via scholarships and bursaries."

The speech was met with riotous applause.

House Republicans, however, are less enthusiastic about President Luthor's proposed tax credit...
