It was really windy that evening - and for a change, it wasn't her fault.

This was the second time Maxine had been in Londonderry for Christmas Eve...she had come years ago when she had been the gawky redhead in 5th grade.   Now she was the gawky redhead that was also a member of the oldest, most revered team of superheroes EVER...the Justice Society of America.

And yet she was here for the same reason many people do things like this - because she loved her grammy.

This had been an annual tradition for Grammy Hunkel for many years, even before she discovered that she could come out of hiding a couple years ago...that she could finally be a part of the Justice Society - as the museum's curator.   She wasn't just that, though - she was EVERYONE's grammy.  Court, Kendra, even Power Girl...all of them loved and revered her simply for just being her.

And it was the easiest thing to do in the world.

She was waiting inside, waiting for Ma to make her grand entrance, as she did every year.  They went all out this year...the theme was Rankin-Bass Rudolph, complete with a very large replica of the Abominable Snowman from the classic cartoon that the store manager said had arrived only that day.

She loved that special...especially with Yukon Cornelius.  She identified with him a lot.

Alcatraz was cracked open and the prisoners spilled free eagerly, but not everyone was spirited off the Rock. Some prisoners had only themselves to blame for that: they were too distracted by the chance to take revenge against the guards or the prison itself to grasp the larger freedom that awaited them across the Bay. As for the rest of the population....

A select few were taken directly to the mainland.

Many others were supplied with inflatable rafts equipped with small lightweight engines.

Some were given inflatable rafts and a set of oars.

Others, either through desperation or cunning, headed for the prison's own docks, where official motorboats awaited those able to overpower the guards.

The warden barricaded himself in his office and continued to sound the mayday, hoping that some help--any help--would arrive soon, before the Rock crumbled into the waters.

Rattled from driving New-Wave off, Firebrand takes stock of the situation: Several heroes have pushed ahead -- Mid-Nite, Tazmanian Devil, Green Arrow, Huntress, Hal Jordan.

What's left behind is a mob scene -- fallen soldiers on both sides, Alan Scott entrenched in a fight with the Enchantress, Mammoth stirring, Flash, Martian Manhunter and Terrific down. Gizmo and Psimon and Lord knows who still at large.

They need the big picture. They need direction, before someone dies.

"Firebrand for JSA to Oracle. This situation is disintegrating. Tell me there's good news."
