Detective Romy Chandler, of the Gotham City Police Department's Major Crimes Unit, was rescued by a unit of her M.C.U. colleagues, on Tuesday. The search for Detective Chandler had been ongoing for over a month after her mysterious disappearance, believed to be related to her near-fatal shooting of Dr. Jonathan Crane, A.K.A. the Scarecrow.

Detective Chandler's heroism was rewarded with threats and attempts on her life from Gotham's colorful criminal community, up until her mysterious disappearance. The M.C.U. had been combing the city for leads, and rumors have it they were assisted by Gotham's vigilante population - fighting a small war in the shadows of the city. Police revealed that lesser-known Gotham criminal Mary Louise Dahl, AKA Baby Doll, had been holding Detective Chandler, using some of the Mad Hatter's paraphernalia to force Chandler to act as her bodyguard.

The Commissioner's office released an official statement that Detect Chandler had been placed in the Witness Protection Program, and moved out of Gotham, to prevent further retaliation attempts.

This place is a dump, and Poison Ivy made it more of one on the way out. The register is empty. Poison Oak cover the walls and water from broken pipes still soaks the carpet in the barely sunlit store. Cheep knock off superhero memorabilia lies strewn across the floor. A lone cop stands outside the place, on guard. It's not much for the lady and the Tiger to go on.

One of these days, Ben decided, he'd really invest in this whole 'cellphone' thing that had swept the world while he was away training. Most of the time he was out in the field he had a Squad comm, but this wasn't exactly Squad business. And there was a phone in the dojo but he didn't want to be overheard.

Which would explain why he was standing in a fetid phone booth - one of the few of this part of Gotham that had a working phone in it. It would also explain the calling card and the emergency stash of change in case the card ran low. Not to mention being absolutely surrounded by graffiti, most of it highly sexually explicit.

Anyway. He dialed an exceedingly-long series of digits to make the call go through. Hopefully it'd be completely untracable, which would be good as what he was asking for was not something he wanted people like this Oracle person he'd heard of to overhear.

They'd heard he took the occasional metahuman hunt job a long time ago. Dropped off the radar until recently, but what does that matter? What matters is half of Arkham is out, one of their own is missing, and the plant lady skipped town after raiding the Gotham PD file room. someone that worked a little...unorthodoxly...was going to be needed on this one. Someone that worked quickly.

"Mr. Turner? Detective Reece, SVU. Can I have a moment?"

Over 50 miles and a world away from the nearest cape haven in a congressional district run by a lady who openly skeptical of cape goodness. People here are just far enough to the action to be fascinated, but not close enough to be terrified. Great place for a collectibles shop under a new identity away from supposed heroes, not so supposed villains, and pesky female reporters who thought he should have set up "licensing agreements," with people that don't really exist like the rest of us. You find the Batman and set up something with his supposed image on it!

The huge, hulking figure knows this place. It's where the enemies of that Bat were kept.

He has shades of memories regarding Gotham City, but nothing concrete. Still, he was drawn here, after he had woke up at some point up north, beating on one of them. The ones that won't leave Grundy be.

He knows he was born on a Monday. Otherwise, things are hazy. He hasn't spoken much...he's not even sure he can speak. He hasn't tried all that much since he was born.

On a Monday.

He remembers a quiet place nearby as he walks. Sewers? No, trash of another sort. He thinks...for a long, ponderous minute.

That way.

He jumps, the force of his leap carrying him a great distance. A glint can be seen off of the bottom of his thick boot, in the nearby pathway lights.

The glint of a badge.

It was a truly bracing Jan afternoon when Victor Zsasz stopped into the cutlery store. He wandered the store, looking at all the beautiful instruments. So many to choose from, it was almost dizzying in its potential.

But after politely dismissing the efforts of the salesman, he went up to the counter and placed his black bag on the counter.

"I understand that you can sharpen knives on the premises, yes?" he asked, and when the clerk responded in the affirmative, he smiled and opened the case to reveal perhaps two dozen knives of varying sorts - from a big Bowie-style hunting knife to any number of instruments one would usually find in any decently-stocked kitchen.

"I'd like to have all of these sharpened if I could." he said. "I'll be back later to pick them up."

The details arranged and the work paid for, Victor crammed his hands into his longcoat and stepped out of the store. So many zombies, shuffling through their pointless little lives.

So many to choose from.

Gotham PD isn't like when she was a undergraduate student from Seattle. The green and rainy city had police so aware that jaywalking was almost unheard of among the locals. Surrounded by mountains and water, it was nothing like the dark, brooding east coast city steeped in history and pain. She fell in love - with the city and her teacher and when he assaulted her, the protectors of this city did nothing. As his degradation and seduction continued, they ignored or laughed at the changes Woodrue ran her through. And now, Chandler have given them permission to shoot those who would allow the city it's natural decay and rebirth all the faster while inside Arkham the Clown still rules and does what the city wishes it could. What it will slowly start to do unless this is stopped.

They need to die. Make room for something good and growing out of all filth.

The male watches the records room merely for his pension. Too seniored and connected to be removed. Too corrupt, lazy, and disgusting to allow on the streets. There is almost a protest as the seductress snakes a hand through his thin hair, snakes another down his pants and causes essence of oleander to seep into his veins through the sensitive skin. He dies with a smile, because it's the least she can offer the late Harvey Dent in her own way.

Chandler's file is a thick one. Surprisingly so. Unlike most in this place, Ms. Chandler actually uses the meager mental health services the Gotham PD offer.

"Interesting..."

What and who she fears won't be hard to find.

Nightmares

Shadows. The flickering of bat wings. Scarecrow tries to find a place to run to... a place to hide.

But the darkness follows him. He cannot escape.

And with the darkness comes the fluttering of wings.

A bat comes from the darkness and consumes a piece of him, leaving him bleeding straw. But he runs further... until another piece is eaten. The straw falls from his body in a trail, showing the darkness exactly where he was moving to. Where he was hiding.

Piece by piece, the bats tear his body apart. The darkness surrounds him in a spray of straw in a flutter of leathery wings... until it becomes a solid wall of blackness.

When the darkness is lifted like the dome off of a silver dinner tray. His head is all that is left as the tray is presented to a ravenous, demonic, fanged Batman.

And his head, silently screaming and protesting, is lifted towards the Batman's mouth...

_______

He awakens with a start and a silent whimper.

He looks around, taking in his surroundings. The shadows still surround him, save for a white light nearby and light spilling in from the hallway outside. The bars on the window tell him what he needs to know.

Prison hospital.

Memories start to return. The fear gas. Officer Chandler's lucky shot. One shot.

And nothing since then.

He smiles. He survived it... and after such a fascinating dream, he has studies to get to. Studies that he can conduct on real subjects, with real scientific results.

Now he just will need to get out of this hospital. It may take time, of course... but the Scarecrow is a patient man.

Extremely patient.

It begins

The MCU is an absolute frenzy. The packages are being gone through with a fine tooth comb for any sign of clues, the detectives have all been called in to cover everything they know about the location, Croc's testimony, the current suspects and who's out of prison... anything and everything they can do.

The people who were on duty have testified a dozen times, giving the same story. No one but residents went in or out, no sign of Romy. They questioned everyone in the building, people in neighboring buildings, and everyone they could find who might have witnessed anything, all coming up blank.

The kidnapping of one of their own is bad enough. To end up having the only real piece of evidence destroyed makes everything worse, certainly. Having her just disappear into thin air might be the worst of all though.

And Maggie... definitely not happy.

A background check on Juliana Richardson produced nothing of interest. What wasn't there was more telling than the pitifully small amount of information that constituted this prostitute's life. Her file was clean. She'd neither used drugs nor been arrested. Interviews with those closest to her described her as extremely cautious. Why then was she pushed from the top of an apartment building to meet her death several stories below? A picture of Juliana in life, bright and vibrant, chilled his blood and brought goosebumps to his skin. She bore a striking and uncanny resemblance to Selina Kyle. The very street she landed in was below Selina's balcony. Her murder was nothing more than a message.

Christopher Phinney wasn't hard to figure. A closer look at his financial state of affairs produced a trail of third party payments. A million dollars had been transferred to him in minuscule payments over the course of a two year span. The originating funds came from an account in Switzerland. The owner was more difficult to find. Layer upon layer of false identities peeled away. A Swiss businessman and diamond collector lay beneath. The information was packaged and shipped to GCPD without delay. No doubt they'd make the connection. With time. If they ever took their gaze from a woman framed.

So many questions left to address.

Wayne Manor is the picture of tranquility. The same can not be said for its master.

Not all of Gotham is run down and dangerous. Of course any city which has as many dangerous criminals in it as the Gotham doesn't truly have completely safe neighborhoods, but Murphy Avenue is relatively safe. An unseasonably warm snap, combined with a relative sense of security, keeps people out in the last few minutes before sunset. A group of young girls playing jumprope down the street without parental supervision is one sign of this relaxed attitude; another is a group of teenagers sit on a stoop, couples within the group sitting in each others' arms.

There's some additional factors to this sense of security. Gotham City has a new hero... and she lives in the area. Though the apartments are a little run-down, people feel safer knowing that Romy Chandler lives near here. She nearly killed the Scarecrow, after all... the sicko is still in a coma in the hospital.

And then there are the added police patrols. They're there to help protect Romy from any potential retribution.

But Killer Croc isn't really concerned by them.

He doesn't want a direct confrontation with the cops, which is why he's dressed in a trenchcoat with an oversized hat. That gets him close to the building.

But once he's climbed the fire escape to her window and smashes in her window, he loses all subtlety.

"Chandler!" he snarls. "Where are you, bitch?"

Hope is an infectious disease.

Even an ounce can exponentially fester, growing to proportions unreal and sickening. A scientific mind trained in detection observes the roots as they form and steps in at precisely the right moment to stop such growth. The fledgelings of love and compassion must be yanked from their soil while still in their infancy. Lest they explode and consume the cold bitterness that is despair.

Victor Fries is here to do what he must. He is here to put right what has gone wrong.

Her name is Romy Chandler.

Tonight she will die.

And so will the hope her existence brings to the people of Gotham.

Catwoman Sought For Questioning In Diamond Theft
Selina Kyle, also known to Gothamites as Catwoman, is now sought by Gotham City Police Department for questioning in connection with Wednesday's theft of the Michal diamond.  The Michal diamond was stolen from the Gotham City Natural History Museum just two days ago and is reportedly worth more than two million dollars.  Internal security cameras failed to catch any portion of the burglary in progress.  A museum security guard though has since come forward with information that may prove vital to the case.  The eye witness account points to Catwoman as the most plausible suspect in the case.  A GCPD spokeswoman reported this morning their search to ascertain her whereabouts has thus far been unsuccessful.  Selina Kyle, former cat burglar turned
entrepreneur, is currently engaged to Gotham's most eligible bachelor - (continued on page 4)

Citizens Band Together To Foil Bank Robbery
The Clock King and a series of hired henchmen entered Second National Bank in the Financial District late yesterday afternoon with clear intentions.  Those inside the bank were immediately held at gunpoint and ordered to surrender their valuables.  What they didn't expect was opposition.  Patrons and bank workers alike, unimpressed with the Clock King's show of force, banded together to protect themselves and prevent the gang's escape.   Among the heroes were a Vietnam Vet, a karate instructor, and a mother of two, all ordinary citizens on their way home after a long day's work.  Clock King and those involved in the attempted robbery have been taken into custody.  The bank intends to reward the unlikely heroes with - (continued on page 6)

Gotham. Payday. During that lovely, if brief time between when most offices close down, and the time the bank closes. Long lines, lots of impatient people, waiting to go shopping or go home. And, of course, lots of money on hand.

That's alright though... what could possibly go wrong?

The Captain is not happy, to say the least. She has one officer out indefinitely - Romy isn't even up for filling out the paperwork following shooting the Scarecrow, little surprise that, given the circumstances. So she's been put on leave under heavy guard. Maggie knows the dangers as well as anyone... Gotham's rogues aren't going to sit quietly after one of their own was shot.

And then Cris... refused to take any down time, despite his hand. He's been helping Renee through it, but having his gun hand in a cast for at least three weeks... is hardly safe to go out on the streets with, but he insisted.

But to top it all off, ever since the headline, the GCPD offices are looking like its Christmas. Romy has been getting cards, flowers, thank you letters, outright fan mail, and then the presents... she shoots a maniac, and suddenly she's everyone's hero. The gifts just keep arriving, and its taking up valuable time to screen them, since who knows what might be Joker gas or a bomb? Plus, its getting hard to find walking room.

"Would someone find somewhere to put all this junk!"

Scarecrow In Critical Condition

Dr. Jonathan Crane, known to most Gothamites as the infamous Scarecrow, was nearly killed in a confrontation last night with Gotham City Police Department's Major Crimes Unit.  Undisclosed sources report Detective Romy Chandler singlehandedly thwarted an attempt by Crane to commandeer the Landmark Theater, located at the corner of Ninth and Patison in Gotham's Financial District.  Chandler shot and incapacitated the Arkham inmate before any damage could be rendered to the Theater or its patrons.  Gotham General Hospital officially lists Crane's condition as critical.  One orderly who refused to be identified suggested the patient might not even last the week.

The only available statement from the GCPD neither condemns nor approves of Detective Chandler's actions in the case.  An investigation into the details of the shooting is currently underway.  In what may be considered a vote of confidence, Chandler will retain her duties and responsibilities during the course of the inquest.  All attempts to contact Chandler for comment have been unsuccessful.

Could this be the end of one of Gotham's deadliest threats?  The Scarecrow was first sighted in Gotham City in...

The call came in late. Romy's usual partner was off getting breakfast, while half the late shift at the GCPD was deep in one bit of research or another. As usual, at first it seemed like the beat cops were just trying to foist work off on the major crimes unit. 'late at night', 'heard noises', 'saw suspicious vehicles around a theatre', etc....
But the address seemed familiar somehow. She had grabbed a newspaper, flipping til she found the life and arts - yeah, same place there was about to be some big artistic debut, lots of VIPs... just the type of thing the poisoner seemed to like.

So, now she finds herself staking out Gotham's oldest theatre, waiting for her backup to show. She confirmed the presence of the old van that was reported. She hasn't seen anyone yet, but that may just be a matter of time.
"Damn... I have a bad feeling about this one." she muses quietly.
