Degaton's soldiers from the future maintain their fire as they are buffeted by Firebrand's flame and Cyclone's torrent, protected by their force shields but clearly on the defense. But already, Johnny Quick seems to have fallen to them.

"I've had ENOUGH OF THIS!" Maxine screams, glaring at whatever enemies are left standing. "Have you?"

The force of her power holds the soldiers at bay ... but they're hardly the most dangerous threat on the field.

Yes says the voice of the seemingly-posessed Kent Nelson. I have had enough.

Seemingly oblivious to the the force of the wind, Doctor Fate moves toward Cyclone, his hands ablaze with mystic light, strands of energy arcing into hawk wings behind him.

Near Vegas

Amazing-Man pilots the airship -- fastest thing they could get their hands on. Gets them from New York to Vegas in a matter of hours. That took some sweet talking to get the government to lend it out, but hey. You save the president enough times, and they're inclined to do you favors.

He glances behind him to the the mixed team -- his fellow All-Stars and the JSAers from the future. He's not entirely sure he believes that, but they seem on the level.

"We're coming up on the coordinates Fate was headed to,"he shouts back at the heroes. "Should send an advance party to investigate?"

They wasted no time getting back to the headquarters ... the revelation that Degaton might be behind their current woes ... The All-Star Squadron found it motivating. None so much as Queen Hippolyta ... The Wonder Woman of the Golden Age ... who found the person she's become closest to in this age in mortal danger.

Except now comes a hero from the future ... Ted Grant, Wildcat. An old man now, but still a mighty warrior. She knew in her heart it was him, but still ... the waters of time were tricky, and she was not inclined to leave anything to chance.

The heroes moved swiftly above the New York rooftops, the citizens of the city staring up in awe at the sight.

It was the beginning of an age of wonders ... and everything still seemed new.

Including the Perisphere ... a stunning monument to the future.

And now, it seems the future has come.

Mr. Terrific was able to draw at least one connection between most of those attacked. The first three -- Nightstar, Lady Quark and Invisible Kid -- were from alternate universes, lost in this world through the quirk of interdimensional travel.

The attacks on Cyclone and Power Girl, he had less answer for, but he was bound and determined to find out. In the meantime, he charged Power Girl to lead a team to track down others known to originate from ... elsewhere.

The list was logner than you'd think. The Legion members were easy to find, and likely self-sufficient. The heroine Harbinger, once the assistant to The Monitor, was living on Themyscria, surrounded by Amazons. Probably safe, for the moment.

But one man, sighted recently in Atlanta, Georgia, assisting STAR Labs with a particle tracking technology, rocketed to the top of Terrific's potential target list ...

All Hell has broken loose as the greatest heroes of World War II, The All-Star-Squadron, battle side by side with their greatest enemies, The Injustice Society, against the menace of Wotan and his mind-controlled lackey, Captain Nazi!

Travelling from mere weeks into the future, an injured Per Degaton has bade the Injustice Society to interfere with Wotan's plans ... plans which will allow him to take control of all Earth's magics and, according to Degaton, grind both America and Germany under his heel, murdering the All-Stars and the Injustice Society in the process!

An uneasy alliance formed, heroes and villains joined forces to bring down the cult of Wotan -- a task made harder by Wotan's mysterious magic amulet, which mutes or totally negates all superpowers in his dungeon lair. While speedsters Flash and Johnny Quick, along with the villainous Shade have maintained at least some of their abilites, the rest have been forced to make do with smarts and fists.

The Gentleman Ghost and Sportsmaster have convinced the younger version of Degaton of the truth of their words, hoping his assistance will turn the tide.

The severely damaged Robotman has engaged Wotan's lackey, but how long cna his resolve hold?

And -- with the wicked wizard distracted by Johnny Quick -- Wotan's amulet is in the Flash's reach.

Can our heroes save the day, or will the world soon fall under Wotan's sway?

Their power levels sorely reduced, a plan is quickly hatched. The dungeon halls are built in a circular pattern, with several of the passageways leading to Wotan's throne room. There are possibly as many as fifty of Wotan's priests along the way, and if they're armed, not one of the Injustice Society has seen. But then, they're not the most reliable of sources.

The villains go of on their own in one direction, leaving only the Ghost behind. The Ghost encourages the teams split into two, to come at Wotan fromt wo different angles, and Fate concedes that it's a sound plan. Robotman -- crackling nad buzzing from damage -- volunteers to take point against Capt. Nazi.

"Jzzzzzzt until you BZZzzzzZZZZ your powerzzzzzzzz bLKKKK."

He looks determined, but it's hard to wonder how long he'll last, damaged as he is.

"All right then," says Fate ... and for many, it's odd hearing his voice unmuffled. He sounds almost normal. "We take the priests down as they come. Whoever can move forward, move forward. Flash, Johnny -- you two have the best odds of snatching the amulet. We'll try to keep him busy, until then."

He's battered and bruised all over.

"Everone clear on the plan?"

The Gentleman Ghost and the Shade interrupt the battling All-Star Squadron and Injustice Society with a combination of amusement and deadly seriousness.

The heroes and villains, their powers muted by the magics pemeating the dank dungeon, stop their fighting as the Ghost commands their attention.

"I'm afraid, gentlemen, that we don't have much time. As I said before, you are all in deadly danger, and as they're here, it's time to put aside fisticuffs and to reveal to our All-Star Associates the truth of certain matters."

He beckons for the heroes and villains to follow him.

"Come," he says and as he passes into the light it's obvious that he really is even more translucent then normal. "Your comrades are nearby, and it seems that Dr.Mid-Nite has managed to free them from Wotan's bonds. We must gather them and work quickly!"

For a split second, leaving Fate's tower feels like stepping into a whirlwind -- whatever forces are buffeting it seem to be increasing in strength. But that is a matter for the future Fate and that strange young woman who was minding his home.

Dr. Occult opens the door into what looks like a wide, empty void, but he walks forward into the darkness without hesitation. After all, it's hardly the first time he's faced the abyss.

"Steady, my friends!" he shouts, without looking backward. "Do not stray from the path! It could prove fatal!"

Indeed, the walkway seems to be building itself underneath their feet.

The four heroes -- Dr. Occult, Green Lantern, Johnny Quick and Amazing Man -- walk for what seems like only seconds, when suddenly they blink and find themselves in a dark, stone corridor -- semingly a dungeon. The air is cold and moist, and there are moans of torment in the distance.

The inside of Fate's tower defies description -- It's bigger inside than it is outside, hallways and staircases moving in all directions, with seemingly little semblance or order. And it seems to be rearranging itself. A staircase glimpsed out of the corner of one's eye is gone before one turns his head to look at it.

But there is no sign of Fate.

"Hmmm," says Occult. "I wonder where the master of the house is?"

And in the distance there's an odd, unexpected odor. Brownies?

The sleepy town of Salem appears undisturbed by the events engulfing the world. Indeed, it appears an All-American New England town -- and despite the snow, life goes on. Even life during wartime. Flags wave up and down streets, and old men shovel the snow from their sidewalks. And if there's ever any thought that Salem's not like other towns, well, it's mentioned in hush whispers, where no one will overhear.

Because Salem knows it's the home of Dr. Fate, and that he's their protector from the forces of evil ... it just doesn't talk about it. And usually, Fate likes it that way.

But something feels wrong...

As the chatter dies down, Liberty Belle takes the podium. Even after a couple years of doing this, her breath always catches when she looks out at this assemblage.

"All right, everybody," she says, casting a glance absently at Johnny Quick. "Settle down. According to Black Canary and the JSA. we have a serious problem on our hands. Bulletman, a mystery man from Fawcett City, has been beaten to an inch of his life by Capt. Nazi, who seems to be active on U.S. soil. And to make matters worse, Zatarra's old enemy, The Wizard, stopped Capt. Nazi from finishing the job, and warned us that ... and I'm quoting here ... 'Hell is coming to America.'"

She looks around at their faces ... confusion, concern, uncertainty --- all of that, yes. But also determination, courage. Not a one of them is shaken by this news.

"So the question is," she says. "What do we do?"
